New Delhi : Delhi Police ace sharpshooter Rajbir Singh, who had been cooling his heels in its traffic wing for some time, is readying his holster again. He has been named chief of a newly set up unit under the crime branch.
Singh, who is assistant commissioner of police now, will head the special operations squad of the Delhi Police, which will target hardened criminals and underworld gangs operating in and around the national capital.
“I am pleased that trust has been again reposed in me. It is good to be back,” Singh told IANS Thursday.
“My unit (special operations squad) of around 70 officials will exclusively target hardened criminals and underworld mobsters operating in the National Capital Region (Delhi, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Noida),” Singh said, adding that this new set-up was the brainchild of Delhi Police Commissioner Y.S. Dadwal.
Singh, who served for six years with the Delhi Police special cell, was shunted out to an insignificant post in the Delhi Armed Police (DAP) and later to the traffic department after tapes of his purported conversations with a contractor on a land deal were made public.
Later, a vigilance probe gave him a clean chit stating that a retired police official connived with others and recorded his phone calls illegally to settle scores with him.
“I am now more focused on building my team of efficient policemen. Within weeks we will gather information about the gangs operating in the capital and its surrounding suburbs and will accordingly design our strategies. We will be using new state of art equipment,” Singh said.
“At present, we are looking for an office in south Delhi,” he added.
Singh, who was liaisoning with the intelligence agencies and other state police forces on terrorists till he was moved out, denied media reports that the Delhi Police had recently opened an office in Srinagar to deal with terrorism and that he was named to head it.
He started off his career as a sub-inspector in 1982 and climbed up the hierarchy through a series of encounters.
