“If the differences continued to be on this violent level, the people will look for other alternatives,” said Nasser al-Sha’er, former deputy of sacked Hamas prime minister Ismail Haneya.

Al-Sha’er urged Hamas and Fatah to brace for reconciliation, saying the reunion “won’t be against any regional or international side and it will help supporting the political process.”

“Hamas and Fatah have no options except the dialogue,” al-Sha’er said, adding that peace and stability can not be found in the region if the Palestinians were still divided.

The U.S. will invite Israel, the Palestinian National Authority and other Arab countries to attend a U.S.-host peace conference in Annapolis to revive the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

But Al-Sha’er dismissed the significance of the conference, saying “counting on Annapolis is unrealistic because the conference only aims at reviving the negotiation process without making a breakthrough.”
