Violence mars AIYF protest against retail giants

Kozhikode : Demonstrations organised in Kerala by the youth wing of the Communist Part of India (CPI) against the entry of large corporation in the retail sector turned violent at many places Monday.

Activists of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) demonstrated in front of retail outlets and pelted stones at the shops. In stone pelting and police action, seven persons suffered injuries.

In Kozhikode, the AIYF activists marched to Spencer’s outlet, owned by RPG Enterprises, and stoned the building shattering windowpanes. The police resorted to baton charge to disperse the protesters. Two AIYF activists suffered injuries in the police action. The police later arrested 14 activists.

In the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram, the demonstrators attacked the Big Baazar outlet. In stone pelting, a policeman suffered serious injuries on his head. The shop also suffered damages in stone pelting.

Protest demonstrations of AIYF activists were also reported from Kollam, Kottayam, Alleppy and Palaghat.
