Australian commando killed in Afghanistan

Sydney : An Australian commando has been killed during an encounter with the Taliban in Afghanistan, it was announced here Friday.

Defense Force Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston confirmed 26-year-old Private Luke Worsley was shot dead 10 kilometers east of Tarin Kowt in Oruzgan Province earlier today.

No other Australian soldiers were injured, he said.

Private Worsley, a member of the Special Operations Task Group, was participating in a planned attack by Australian forces against the Taliban.

The private was on his second tour of duty to Afghanistan and had served in East Timor. He qualified as a commando in 2004.

Two other Australians were killed in Afghanistan this year; Trooper David Pearce and SAS Sergeant Matthew Locke.
