Baghdad : A suicide bomber blew himself up at a police check-post near the city of Baquba, the capital of the volatile Diyala province Tuesday, killing six people and wounding seven others, an officer of the provincial police said.
“A suicide bomber wearing an explosive belt blew himself up at a police checkpoint on the main road between the town of Buhruz and the city of Baquba, some 65 km northeast of Baghdad,” the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The attack, which occurred at about 11:20 a.m. (0820 GMT), killed three policemen and three civilians at the checkpoint, the source said.
Seven people, including three policemen, were also wounded during the blast, which damaged several civilian cars that were driving past the checkpoint at the time of the attack, he said.
Diyala has long been a hotbed of insurgency led by Al Qaida in Iraq network and sectarian violence between Sunni and Shiite communities.
