Kabul : A suicide attacker driving an explosives-packed vehicle targeted a foreign military convoy Tuesday in central Kabul, killing two civilians, an Afghan Interior Ministry spokesperson said.
“The bomber blew up his car near a convoy of three vehicles of foreign troops, near a Defence Ministry building,” said Alishah Paktiawal, investigations chief of the Kabul police, adding that the bomber was also killed in the blast.
Paktiawal said no one in the convoy was hurt, but Mohammad Halim, a security guard in the area, who witnessed the attack, said: “I saw bodies of six foreigners taken away by American soldiers.”
However, Halim could not say if the six were wounded or killed.
The bomb exploded in the Wazir Akbar Khan district near the Canadian and Pakistani embassies and military facilities.
A police official at the site, who requested anonymity, said four Afghan civilians were wounded.
The site was cordoned off by US troops and the wreckage of three armoured vehicles that were badly damaged in the blast were seen at the site.
The bomber’s severed foot was blown several metres away from the blast site, witnesses said.
“I was sitting at the shop when I heard a huge bang,” said Mohammad Nasir, who was cleaning up shattered windowpanes at a shop about 10 metres from the blast site.
“I rushed out and saw a big body of dust and fire in front of me,” Nasir said.
The possible targets were Humvee vehicles that belonged to US-led coalition troops.
Meanwhile, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force reported that none of its soldiers was killed or injured.
