The mutt, about 56 km from here, reportedly received a postcard Monday that asked the Shankarachaya and his disciples to accept Islam or they would be destroyed.

The sender signed himself as Al Qaeda.

“The mutt officials reported the matter to police Wednesday. I have gone through it and it could be a fake threat, because the writing has several spelling errors,” district police chief Asit Panigrahi told IANS.

“However, we are not taking a chance. We have deployed five armed men at the mutt and tightened security around it. We are inquiring into the genuineness of the letter.”

Nischilananda Saraswati, Puri’s Shankaracharya, is currently at Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh.

Panigrahi said that the police have also informed their counterparts in Madhya Pradesh.
