“Dependence on import of key equipment like boilers and turbines needs to be rationalised for augmenting generation capacity to provide uninterrupted power supply at affordable prices,” Singh said.

The minister was addressing a seminar on project management in the power sector organised by Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

She also called for removing all bottlenecks including those relating to infrastructure like ports, road and railways to ensure that generation capacity was added at an optimum pace.

“Domestic manufacturing capacity in key inputs like cement, steel and aluminium should be addressed as a matter of urgency to pave the way for augmentation of capacity of ports, rail and road network to support capacity addition in the power sector,” the minister said.

Speaking earlier at the seminar, Jayant Srinivas Kawale, joint secretary in the ministry of power, said standard designs for key equipment like boilers and turbines should be adopted to quicken thermal generation capacity addition.

He also called for increasing use of IT to improve connectivity between developers and vendors in order to improve project management and avoid undue delays in commissioning.
