Thiruvananthapuram : Congress politician turned actor Rajmohan Unnithan Monday has alleged that factionalism, which plagued the party a few years ago, is rearing its head again.

“Media reports have surfaced that in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts, the erstwhile I (Congress-Indira) faction have met and this is not going to do any good for the Congress party at all. All those concerned should see that this is nipped in the bud,” said Unnithan who has been in political wilderness ever since loosing a high profile assembly poll against present Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan in the 2006 assembly polls.

Incidentally, Unnithan who now professes that factionalism should not be promoted at any cost was the right hand man of then dissident Congress leader K. Karunakaran and was the official spokesperson of the Karunakaran faction.

Unnithan later parted ways with Karunakaran and became the biggest critic of the veteran and his son K. Muraleedharan, just ahead of the May 2004 general elections and began a statewide election tour lashing out at the duo.

Unnithan was suspended from the party soon after the polls. He then made waves by acting in half a dozen Malayalam films.

His suspension was later revoked and he contested the Tellichery assembly seat, but lost to Balakrishnan.

“The present Left government in Kerala under V.S. Achuthanandan is tottering and it is now ideal that the Congress-led United Democratic Front be strengthened and all those who have left Congress return,” said Unnithan.

When asked if he wanted Karunakaran to return to the party, he said Karunakaran should come back. About Muraleedharan, he said: “It is like going to a vegetarian restaurant and ordering a dosa. When the waiter brings the dosa, invariably there is a vada also and it is the same with Muraleedharan.”
