Srinagar : Security forces gunned down nine guerrillas in an ongoing gunfight at Ragawali forests in Tangmarg area of north Kashmir, in which two senior army officers were also killed, sources said.
The encounter that began Tuesday was still going on, official sources said Wednesday afternoon.
An officer here told IANS that a heavily armed group of militants was surrounded by the troops of 34 Rashtriya Rifles sparking a fierce gun battle between the holed-up terrorists and troops. Two army majors were killed and three troopers were injured in the encounter.
Major K.P. Vinay died on the spot and four other troopers including Major Raman were evacuated to army base hospital late Tuesday. Major Raman succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
Sources here said the village headman was also among the injured.
