Srinagar : The Indian Army chief General Deepak Kapoor Saturday reviewed the security situation in the Kashmir valley.

On his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir after taking over as the army’s 23rd chief on Sep 30, Kapoor interacted with senior military commanders including Lieutenant General H.S. Panag, the general officer commanding (GOC) of the northern command, and Lieutenant General A.S. Sekhon, the corps commander of the army’s 15th corps in the valley.

He also visited 34 Rashtriya Rifles, which Thursday dealt a blow to the Lashkar-e-Taiba guerrilla outfit by eliminating nine hardcore terrorists.

Kapoor lauded the troops for their bravery and the leadership of Major K.P. Vinay and Major Dinesh Raghuraman who laid down their lives in the operation.

“In a unique and unprecedented gesture, the army chief pinned seven Army Chief Commendation Cards on the chests of those gallant soldiers who played key roles in successful elimination of nine dreaded terrorists,” an army spokesman said here.

Before leaving for New Delhi after the two-day visit, he also called on the state governor, Lieutenant General (Retd) S.K. Sinha at Raj Bhawan in the state’s summer capital Srinagar.
