Baghdad : A car bomb went off here Sunday near the governor’s building killing two civilians, shortly after gunmen opened fire on the governor of the Iraqi capital in a separate incident.
Five were wounded when an explosives-laden vehicle, parked on a road in the Salihiya neighbourhood, was detonated, a police source told Voices of Iraq news agency.
Security forces quickly sealed off the blast site, including a bridge that links the area of Senk to Salihiya “in fear of other attacks,” said the agency. Civilians were pushed back from the surrounding areas.
In a separate act, the governor of Baghdad survived an attempt on his life earlier in the day when his convoy was attacked.
According to state-owned al-Iraqiya TV channel, Hussein al-Tahan was on his way back from a visit to Saydiya district, the scene of a recent demonstration, when he was targeted.
Two of the governor’s guards were injured in this incident.
According to police sources, the area where the governor was attacked has been a centre of violent activities, possibly by members of the Al Qaeda in Iraq terrorist group.
