SPO’s assault rifle goes missing; Police arrests 3

Mendhar (Poonch) : Police has arrested three police personnel including two Special Police Officers (SPOs) after an assault rifle with some ammunition went missing from the private accommodation of the cops, here on Saturday.

Official sources said that the AK- 47 rilfe issued to one SPO, Nidayat Baig, went missing in mysterious circumstances on Saturday. Through the accused has claimed that the locks of his rented room were broken by unidentified persons – who decamped with the assult rifle, 4 magazines, 1 pouch and 1 mobile cell – police said that it has arrested all the three suspects to ascertained fact.

Giving details sources told News Agency of Kashmir that SPO Nidayat Baig informed the police about the theft of the assault rifle late last evening. He told the police that he had kept his rifle in his rented room and by-mistake taken the gun of his colleague Zakir Hussain with him.

He claimed that when he returned back home, last evening, he found the locks of the room broken. On searching he noticed his gun and other items missing from the room.

The police immediately swung into action and detained three cops, who were putting up together in the room, for questioning. They have been identified as Constable Zakir Hussain, SPO Nidayat Baig and SPO and Sofi Ahmed Khan.

Additional Superintendent Poonch Muhammad Shafi confirmed the reports and said that action would be taken against the officials if they were found guilty. However, he said that the matter needs to be investigated in detail so that justice can be delivered.
