Habibur Rahman Taj, 29, Ibrahim, 31, and Selim alias Lambu Selim, 35, were Sunday handed over to the Bangladesh Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the India-Bangladesh border at Benapole by a West Bengal Police team.

Taj, second-in-command of notorious Bangladeshi criminal Kala Jahangir, had been living in India under the alias Naimul Hasan before he was arrested in Kolkata in March.

Ibrahim and Selim used the names Sohel Ibrahim and Biplob respectively to hide their identity, The Daily Star reported. They too were held this year on charges of entering India illegally.

Some 30 police officials from West Bengal brought the three criminals to the Border Security Force (BSF) camp at Petrapole. They were given away to a Bangladesh team led by CID Additional Superintendent of Police Abdullah Aref.

Bangladesh’s interim government has passed on to Indian authorities names of 373 criminals from that country it says are hiding in India.

India too has submitted a list of wanted criminals and political fugitives, including militants from its northeastern region.

India has in the past accused Bangladesh of sheltering top members of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) who it says do legal business in Bangladesh. Dhaka has denied their presence.
