A bench of Justices C.K. Thakkar and Dalveer Bhandari gave the Orissa government two weeks to answer Rajasthan government’s allegation that the Orissa home secretary and the director general of police were protecting Mohanty, the state’s suspended director general of police (Home Guard).

Rajasthan had filed an affidavit in the apex court alleging that the Orissa government was not helping it arrest the police officer.

Denying the allegation, the Orissa government’s standing counsel Sibo Mishra said that when a Jaipur court issued non-bailable arrest warrant against Mohanty, an Orissa police officer of the rank of deputy commissioner of police was present in the court to receive it.

He said the Orissa government was trying its level best to arrest Mohnaty.

Mohanty was charged with helping his son, Biti Hotra Mohanty, escape from Jaipur jail as he had given surety for his parole.

Biti, convicted of raping a German tourist in Alwar last year, was sentenced to seven years in jail. Released on parole in November 2006, he has not returned so far.

The Rajasthan police have been looking for both the father and son.
