Shinde was here to inaugurate an eye-care project sponsored by power utility major NTPC Ltd. He told media persons that the proposed second UMTPP would be set up at a suitable location in coastal Orissa.

The high-grade coal required for the second UMTPP would be imported from abroad, he said, stating that the captive coal block for the first UMTPP had already been allotted.

Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has agreed to provide all required infrastructure like land and water for the second 4,000 MW UMTPP, Shinde said.

Earlier, the central government had cleared the first 4,000 MW UMTPP to be set up in Sundergarh district at an estimated cost of Rs.160 billion.

In order to meet the growing power demand in the country, the central government plans to set up ten UMTPPs with capacity of 4,000 MW each.

It has plans to invest Rs.10 trillion to achieve capacity addition of over 78,000 MW of power during the current plan period, according to official sources.
