Cairo,(DPA) Egyptian rescue workers were Monday continuing to search for bodies after passengers trying to board a ferry fell into the river Nile, claiming the lives of at least six, three of them children, reports said on Monday.
The incident occurred in the southern province of Minya Sunday afternoon when a large number of passengers were attempting to board the ferry and a ramp linking it to the riverbank collapsed, according to reports quoting provincial governor Fouad Saadadin.
One of the boat’s railings also collapsed, sending more passengers into the river, security officials told local media. Eyewitnesses said several people were still unaccounted for.
The ferry was transporting dozens of passengers across the river from the village of Abu Qirqas on the western bank of the Nile to the eastern bank in Minya, 200 km south of Cairo.
