The team of Vijay Kumar, C.K. Chaudhary and Hambir Singh claimed the men’s 25 metres centre fire pistol with an aggregate of 1,744 points.

Vijay Kumar shot a fantastic 590, just one short of the meet record, making him a strong medal contender for the individual competition as well.

Chatholi Hamza brought India another bronze when he finished third in the men’s 1,500 metres behind two Kenyans. Jeetender had won India’s first medal, the 800 metres bronze Tuesday.

India’s boxers too did themselves proud when four out of the six of them won their respective bouts to advance to the quarter-finals, taking the home team’s total to eight men.

P. Narjit Singh (57kg), Thoi Thoi Singh (64 kg), D. Bhagyarajan (68 kg) and Mohinder Thapa (81kg) were all winners in the ring, while Sanjay Kolte (57kg) and Amarjit Singh (75kg) failed to advance.

The Indian spikers beat the games’ defending champions Brazil 3-1 to advance to the four-team super league from Group B along with China. South Korea and Qatar made it from Group A and the teams face each other in a round robin league to determine the medal winners.

India defeated Brazil 23-25, 25-17, 26-24 and 25-17.

In the handball competition, Indian hopes were dashed when the team went down to Greece 32-27 despite being 15-14 up at the interval.
