New Delhi : An approval body of the Indian government will be meeting here Friday to consider 15 proposals of setting up special economic zones (SEZs) across the country.
The commerce and industry ministry’s Board of Approvals (BoA) would be discussing the status of the proposals under the chairmanship of Commerce Secretary G.K. Pillai.
Out of the 15 proposals, as many as 11 are from the IT and ITeS sector as the industry had been pushing hard for extending the tax concessions granted to them. Some of the prominent proposals include that of Tata Consultancy Services, Unitech and DLF.
The board would be meeting for the first time ever since the cabinet presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh approved the new rehabilitation and resettlement policy, which aims at compensating displaced people.
The BoA has so far given formal approval to 386 proposals and notified over 149 SEZs.
