Five nuclear plants shut down

New Delhi, Oct 22 APP: Five nuclear power plants in India have been shut down while remaining twelve others are operating at an average of less than fifty percent capacity due to shortage of fuel.

Media reports quoting S K Jain, Chairman and Managing Director of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) in Mumbai said two units at Narora atomic power plant in Uttar Pradesh are closed for annual maintenance while the newly commissioned Kaiga unit 3 in Karnataka and one unit of Kalpakkam atomic power plant near Chennai are facing closure due to shortage of fuel.

Similarly, he said two units of Rajasthan Atomic Power plants were shut down for replacement of feeder pipe.

Due to this situation the average nuclear power production in India has gone down to less than fifty percent.

Quoting the Nuclear Fuel Complex Chief Executive R N Jairaj, media reports said due to “mismatch” of fuel, his company could achieve thirty percent production of the total capacity.

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) has also started facing the situation of “mismatch” of fuel.

With the installed capacity of around 4,000 MWe, NPCIL has been forced to cut down power production, the reports added.
