Mumbai : Civil rights activist Teesta Setalvad Saturday urged the Supreme Court to consider as evidence the Tehelka newsmagazine’s investigative report on the Gujarat violence of 2002 and to ensure safety of the survivors and witnesses in pending cases.
An application was made to the apex court in view of the open manner in which several of those involved and accused in the communal carnage had boasted admission of their role, said Setalvad, secretary of the Mumbai-based Citizens for Justice and Peace.
“We have also urged the court to call for the Tehelka tapes and examine them as evidence apart from seeking expeditious hearing of the pending matters forthwith,” Setalvad told IANS.
Her plea follows Tehelka’s sting operation, whose findings were revealed Thursday, in which many leaders and activists of Gujarat’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its affiliate organisations are shown narrating the killings they committed.
Setalvad has already petitioned the apex court for the review and retrial of cases related to several incidents of massacres in Gujarat, where more than 1,000 people were killed in the sectarian strife.
