First female HM arms carrier– a law student – among 2 arrested

Jammu : Jammu and Kashmir police arrested a female Law student, allegedly working as arms carrier with Hizbul Mujahideen, along with a UBGL launcher and a grenade besides some AK ammunition, when she was on her way to Srinagar from Surankote area of Poonch district. On her disclosure police has also arrested a top ranked Upper Ground Worker (UGW) of HM from Udhampur area.

Well informed sources in the police told News Agency of Kashmir that based on a lead provided by intelligence agencies, Special Operation Group of Jammu and Kashmir police had kept a close watch on the movement of a female student from a private law college, Dogra Law College.

Identified as Nahida Altaf daughter of Altaf Ahmed of Iqbal Nagar, Surankote, the girl was putting up in a private accommodation in Jammu and was usually traveling to her ancestral town and Srinagar, sources said. Daughter of a head constable of police, the girl was allegedly working with HM from last more than a year.

Police said that it intercepted the girl, who was driving a Maruti Car (JK02AB-8736), at Tanda near Akhnoor when she was on her way to Srinagar. On the searches of the vehicle police recovered one UBGL launcher, one UBGL grenade and some AK ammunition, sources said.

Though officials claimed that the recovery was made today, it was reliably learnt that the girl was arrested about a week back and was being interrogated since than in Akhnoor area by senior SOG officials.

On her disclosure, sources said, police arrested another person Altaf Ahmed from Udhampur district, who was instrumental in persuading the law student to work for Hizbul Mujahideen.

Sources told NAK that the duo used to carry arms and ammunition from Poonch district to Srinagar and was being highly paid for this by the Hizbul Mujahideen. Altaf, sources added, has confessed in his interrogation that he was also involved in an IED blast at Surankote bus stand.

An SOG, sources said, also raided girls hostel of Dogra Law College today and picked up another student Anjum Akhtar from Anantnag district for questioning. However, the girl was later released by the police.

The duo, sources added, has further told the police that the consignment of the arms was to be handed over to another person in Srinagar, However, the girl could not reveal the name of receiver of the consignment.

Sources said that some more arrests were likely in next few days.
