Keshava Rao, who is also a Rajya Sabha MP, told reporters that he decided to resign to facilitate an impartial probe into the incident. He added that he would go to New Delhi soon to submit his resignation to party president Sonia Gandhi.

“I don’t want to interfere with the probe and hence I have decided to tender my resignation,” he said.

Real estate dealer B. Prasanth Reddy died Sunday evening after being shot at close range, allegedly by Keshava Rao’s son Venkat Rao at the latter’s flat in Prashasan Nagar in the upmarket Jubilee Hills.

Police registered a case of murder against Venkat late Sunday following a complaint from Prashant’s family, who disputed Keshava Rao’s statement that it appeared to be a case of suicide.

Venkat, who was involved in a fight with another business partner and international volleyball player Ravikanth Reddy a few months ago, allegedly shot Prashant after a heated argument over a land deal.

Prashant, 37, was declared brought dead at Apollo Hospital. He died of a bullet injury in his right temple. Venkat was also admitted to the same hospital due to “shock”.

The police are yet to arrest him and have not confirmed whether it was a case of homicide or suicide.
