Bangladesh parties can do indoor politics within limits

Dhaka : Law and Information Adviser of Bangladesh Barrister Mainul Hosein Monday said Bangladesh government has allowed political parties to conduct their indoor politics on political and election related maters.

They must however abide by the guidelines, violation of the limits will be considered as an offense under the emergency power rule, he said while briefing journalists at his Secretariat office here.

Some relaxations in the Emergency Power Rule have been made considering the humanitarian grounds, he said adding the government wants to reestablish the democracy in the country.

Emphasizing the importance of the involvement of the honest and competent persons in the politics he said, it is needed to be conscious about the politics and the failure of the political leaders for which such crises were created in the country.

The adviser said the overall law and order of the country has improved and the security of people has been ensured.

Barrister Mainul Hosein said the politicians should learn from the errors that they made in the past, as the people would take right decision by reviewing the activities of the politicians in future.

He referred to another amendment to be brought in the emergency power rule and said there would be provision that the wife, children not above 18 years, unmarried daughter, mother, mother-in-law or sister who are co-accused along with the principal accused in any case would be able to apply for bail and the court may consider their prayers.

In reply to a question he said according to the constitution if any accused is convicted by the court and given a minimum two- year imprisonment, would not be eligible for contesting the polls.

Meanwhile, political parties and individuals welcomed the address of Chief Adviser of the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed for lifting ban on indoor politics.

Dr Ferdous Ahmed Qureshi, coordinator of the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), said the government and the election commission will go ahead in line with the declared roadmap for holding general election by 2008.

While exchanging views with the newsmen at his city’s Segunbagicha office, the PDP leader also hoped that a pro-people and democratic government would be formed through the next general election.

ASM Abdur Rab, former minister, said lifting ban on indoor politics will create opportunities for mobilizing public opinions to bring reforms in political parties as well as in administration.

He, however, urged all concerned to remain alert against misuse of the opportunity of indoor politics
