New Delhi : An atmosphere of fear and anxiety continues to hold sway in the Muslim concentration Jamia Nagar area here as 32 Muslim youth, mostly between 16 and 18 years, have been arrested since a scuffle took place between Muslims and the police following a policeman’s alleged desecration of a copy of the Holy Qur’an at Batla House Chowk on September 22.
Police and paramilitary troops can be seen camping or patrolling in Batla House, Zakir Nagar, Abul Fazl Enclave and Shaheen Bagh colonies of Jamia Nagar. Some policemen in civil dress are also reported to have been making rounds in the streets of this area. This has made the market places in the area wear a deserted look.
Besides arresting 32 Muslim youth by now, the police have issued nonbailable warrant against Councillor Shoib Danish of Zakir Nagar, Councillor Jamaluddin of Okhla and one Guddu Tyagi, who have gone underground, for fanning the violence. The police are making raids at different places to arrest them.
The South District police have transferred the case of arson and destroying public property to the Crime Branch of Delhi Police, adding anxiety to the fear psychosis of the Muslims.
Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Delhi & Haryana Ameer Dr Muhammad Rafat said by arresting Muslim youth and making rounds in Muslim mohallas, the police are trying to further deteriorating the situation instead of bringing it to normalcy.
In a statement released here Wednesday, Dr Rafat demanded that the arrested Muslim youth be released immediately and called upon the administration to stop the ongoing detention and unnecessary harassment of Muslims.
The JIH leader has also urged the social workers and dignitaries of the area to help bring the situation to normalcy by establishing contacts with the police and administrative authorities.
He also countered the police claim that there was no incident of desecration of the Holy Qur’an in the evening of September 22.
"At the delicate time when the time for Iftar or breaking the daylong Ramadan fast is approaching, Muslims cannot get provoked without any rhyme or reason," he argued.
