Tehran, Iran : The Iranian Congress approved a motion on Wednesday condemning the imprisonment in the United States of five Cuban men, and rejected Washington’s economic, trade and financial blockade of the Island.

The text, which demands immediate release of men, known also as The Five, was presented by Hadad Adel, congressional speaker, as a proposal by the Iran-Cuba Friendship Group of the Iranian Legislature.

Rene Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez were arrested in September 1998, after infiltrating anti-Cuban groups in Miami that carry out terrorist activities against Cuba.

The Five, as they are internationally known, were sentenced to unfair terms that range from double life imprisonment to 15 years in prison, and subjected to harsh prison conditions for crimes they did not commit.

The proposal coincides with the presentation, at the 62nd UN General Assembly, of the report “Need to Eliminate the Economic, Trade, and Financial Blockade against Cuba.”

That blockade, which has been imposed on the Island for almost five decades, has caused losses of over $89 billion, a figure that does not include the value of the products that have not been produced, or damage caused by the onerous credit conditions imposed on the country.
