London : Fiona MacKeown, the mother of a British teenager who was raped and murdered in Goa, says she is “over the moon” at the news that the police officer she accused of lying has been sacked.

Nerlon Albuquerque, a sub-inspector with Anjuna police, who had originally concluded that 15-year-old Scarlette Keeling had drowned to her death, was sacked Friday after allegations that he mishandled the inquiry.

MacKeown accused Albuquerque of malpractice and campaigned for a second post-mortem, which concluded that Scarlette had more than 50 bruises and that she had been given ecstasy, cocaine and LSD on the night she died.

Police then announced she had been raped and murdered – something her mother had insisted on ever since Scarlette’s bruised and semi-naked body was found on the beaches of Anjuna in February.

Speaking from her home in north Devon, MacKeown said she was “over the moon” at the news of Albuquerque’s dismissal.

“I believe he initiated a cover-up in the case. He told me it was accidental drowning. He ignored the first autopsy so we had to get another one done,” she said.
