Israel announces closure of Iranian monitoring office

Tel Aviv : Israel is closing a government office charged with monitoring the Iranian nuclear threat, less than 18 months after it was created, the Associated Press reported.

The decision is a tacit admission that the Strategic Affairs Ministry served little purpose other than providing a Cabinet post for one of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s former political allies.

Government spokesman Mark Regev said Monday the ministry’s functions would pass to other government departments. Regev said the closure would not affect Israel’s security.
