Melbourne : ANZ National Bank, one of Australia’s top financial services groups, has announced it is to move 500 New Zealand jobs to Bangalore, India.
ANZ National chief executive officer Graham Hodges says no New Zealand staff members would lose their jobs, however.
“Our goal is to redeploy all our people who may be affected by this initiative, and we are confident of achieving this goal because with normal staff turnover we employ around 800 new people in Wellington and Auckland each year,”’ he is quoted as saying by the Australian Associated Press (AAP) news agency.
“The staged shift of work over the next 18 months will also help staff who wish to be re-deployed find a suitable alternative role within the bank. As a result, none of our staff need to lose their job.”
However, bank staff union spokesman Andrew Campbell said the jobs being sent to Bangalore were good jobs with good wages, some of which were in the top third of New Zealand incomes.
“ANZ National is leading a race to the bottom for cheap labour in India by proposing to send these jobs offshore,” he added.
