Brussels : The European Commission on Saturday advocated a nuclear way out to the rise in oil prices and climate changes, against some conceptions of atomic energy as a taboo subject.
The EU executive organ is studying the rise of private investment in the nuclear sector, even though the issue is in the center of strong debates in several European States such as Germany, Great Britian, or Spain, over security of the facilities.
“Nuclear energy is a major contribution in our battle against climate change, and provides guarantees for electricity supply,” EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs affirmed.
The official considers it necessary to reinforce cooperation among EU member countries in problems linked to safe functioning of nuclear plants, and substantial investments to replace old technologies.
Piebalgs asserted the EC is analyzing formulas to find a way out to difficulties linked to licenses, funds, and responsibility in case of accidents.
