Equity markets continue gaining rally

Mumbai : The Indian equity markets continued its gaining rally and ended Monday with a decent gain piggybacking on the strong show by Asian markets.

Positive cues from the global markets boosted the domestic bourses in the early trade.

The 30-share benchmark of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) sensitive index (Sensex) opened at 16,611.41 points and touched a high of 16,778.59 before closing at 16,739.33 points. It went up by 258.13 points at the day’s close or 1.57 percent.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) S&P Nifty, which opened at 4,955.90points, closed at 5037.00 points. It went up by 78.6 points or 1.59 percent

The BSE Midcap index, which closed at 6,983.26 points, went up by 146.87 points or 2.15 percent.

The BSE Smallcap index, which closed at 8,752.83 points went up by 221.47 points or 2.6 percent.

On BSE, the market breadth was positive -2,052 shares advanced, 674 declined and 46 maintained status quo.

The top gainers of the day were Tata Steel at Rs.776.80 up by 8.61 percent, Jaiprakash Associate at Rs.233.05 gained 7.27 percent, Reliance Communications at Rs.559.10 surged to 5.42 percent.

The top losers of the day included Satyam at Rs.458.95 down by 2.13 percent, Infosys at Rs.1,645.05 slid by 1.28 percent, Wipro at Rs.453.65 down by 1.21 percent.
