Afghan troops kill 16 suspected Taliban insurgents

Kabul : Afghan troops have eliminated 16 suspected Taliban militants over the past two days in the southernand eastern parts of the country, officials said Tuesday.

In the first firefight which occurred in Arghistan and Marof districts of southern Kandahar province early Tuesday, nine insurgents were killed, commander of Border police Force in the province Abdul Razaq told Xinhua.

Seven more insurgents were killed in Zarmat district of eastern Paktia province Monday night as international troops carried out air raids on militants, Mastak Khan Zazi, an officer at Press Department of Afghanistan National Army (ANA) in Paktia province told Xinhua.

Zazi said the insurgents’ bodies had been taken to hospital.

Taliban insurgents have yet to make comment.

More than 400 people mostly civilians have been killed in Taliban-related violence and conflicts so far this year in Afghanistan.
