A sub-divisional police officer and two constables were also injured while trying to control the two clashing mobs at the intersection between two áreas, Fakirwada and Lohiyanagar, in the town near Jalgaon district, the Chopda police said.

While the town police and state reserve police force personnel brought the situation under control after firing 25 rounds, tension prevailed in the area till Wednesday evening with people demanding post-mortem of the deceased in the presence of their representatives and suspension of the police officer who ordered firing.

While police sources did not know the immediate provocation for the clash, they said there was an old feud between the two groups.

“The two persons, Sanjay Laxman Choudhary and Deepak Atmaram Mahajan, who fell to police bullets were at the forefront of the groups indulging in arson and police inspector P.G. Hakey had to open fire when all other attempts to control the mob failed,” a police officer told IANS.

Deputy Chief Minister R.R. Patil Wednesday announced in the state assembly in Mumbai that a state criminal investigation department (CID) enquiry would be held into the police firing.

Turning down an opposition demand for a probe by a retired judge, Patil said a CID probe would be appropriate and that those instigating enmity between two caste or communal groups would not be spared.
