Patna: Darul Uloom Deoband, India’s prominent Islamic seminary, has upheld Imarat Shariah’s (Bihar, Jharkhand & Orissa) fatwa against Jamshed Ashraf being Bihar’s excise minister.
Giving its opinion on Imarat’s fatwa, the seminary held that Islam does not allow Muslims to get involved in a profession related to liquor. The Imarat has asked the minister to relinquish his post. Ashraf has been given the portfolio of excise ministry following 13th April Bihar cabinet reshuffle.
Soon after Ashraf was assigned the ministry by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Imarat asked Ashraf not to hold the ministry which dealt with something that was haram (prohibited) in Islam.
Endorsing the Imarat move, Darul Uloom Deoband’s deputy rector Maulana Qari Mohammad Usman said the fatwa issued by Imarat was based on Shariat. Involvement of a Muslim in a profession which dealt with liquor directly or indirectly is illegal under Shariat.
