Tehran : Iran and Syria have issued a joint statement here, calling for Iran’s nuclear dossier to be returned to the IAEA.
The joint statement was inked by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Tehran on Sunday.
The joint statement read that during mutual talks, the two presidents discussed expansion of mutual relations as well as regional developments.
The two sides called for exchange of views to help deepen ties between Iran and Syria, the statement said.
On current developments in the Middle East region, the two sides condemned Israel’s atrocities in the occupied lands.
The Iranian president strongly backed the rights of the Syrian nation to regain sovereignty over the Golan Heights.
The statement also underlined the need to continue efforts to bring about national reconciliation in Palestine and form a Palestinian state with the holy Qods as its capital.
The statement also called for restoration of security and stability to Iraq through a national reconciliation and withdrawal of foreign forces from Iraq.
On Iran’s nuclear activities, the two sides reviewed the country’s nuclear dossier and underlined that it should be referred to the IAEA while confirming the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear programme.
Iran’s nuclear case should be solved through mutual talks, underlined the joint statement, adding that it is the legitimate right of the Iranian nation to make use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
Calling for a Middle East free from weapons of mass destruction mainly nuclear arms, the statement drew the attention of the international community to the nuclear arsenal of the Israeli regime and urged international organisations to swiftly take action to remove such a threat.
The Syrian president thanked Ahmadinejad and the Iranian nation for their warm hospitality towards him and his entourage and invited the Iranian president to pay an official visit to Syria.
Ahmadinejad accepted the invitation and promised to visit Damascus at the earliest opportunity.
