New Delhi: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has expressed shock and grief over the stampede at the Naina Devi Temple in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh in which over 145 people were killed and many injured yesterday.
In a press statement issued today, JIH general secretary Nusrat Ali offered his deepest condolences to the families of those killed and injured in the incident, and described the rumours of a landslide as a very irresponsible and condemnable act which actually triggered a stampede by pilgrims who ran down a narrow mountain path after railings broke.
He urged the administration to adopt foolproof methods and said, “Administration should provide a high level safety and protections when such big public gatherings or conventions are held across the country.” Lauding the dedication and passion shown by the local residents in relief works, he emphasized, “there is a need to spread this noble fervor among other citizens too.”
