Chennai : A warden of the high security Puzhal Prison here was dismissed from service and 20 officials, including a jailor, were transferred with immediate effect after the warden was caught red-handed demanding money to gratify prisoners while the complicity of the other officials’ was suspected, a top prison official said Tuesday.
“Warden S. Solomon was caught red-handed demanding money to gratify prisoners last week. Subsequent enquiries led to suspicion of some other officials’ complicity and they were transferred with immediate effect,” Additional Director General of Police R. Nataraj told IANS.
Police personnel, who have now been appointed, were under orders to check every eatable being taken into the prison. Special care is being taken to prevent smuggling of banned items like mobile phones, drugs and liquor into the prison, police sources said.
The plot to bomb several places in Tamil Nadu and other places in India was discovered late July in the same prison on the day of Bangalore blasts. It led to arrests of over five Islamic fundamentalists, all of whom are being questioned in Tirunelveli, 600 km from here.
