Chandigarh : To honour shooter Abhinav Bindra for his Olympic gold medal at Beijing, the Panjab University has decided to set up a medal and a cash award of Rs.100,000 in his name at its forthcoming convocation ceremony.
“The award and the medal has been announced by R.C. Sobti, university vice-chancellor, in recognition of the victory and honour which Chandigarh lad Abhinav Bindra has brought to the city and to the whole nation,” said a varsity spokesman.
Sobti has conveyed his congratulations to the Bindra family for having motivated Abhinav in sustaining his interest and focusing on his sport, which has made him the number one in the whole world.
Interestingly, Abhinav Bindra did not study at the Panjab University and not in any of the colleges affiliated to the university.
He had done his schooling at St. Stephen’s School, Chandigarh.
