Kolkata : Two people – a young mother and her two-year-old daughter – died after falling into a well Monday in a West Bengal village, police said.
Nineteen-year-old Ramani Hansa died while she was trying to save her daughter Sujni, who drowned in the well at Bhurkunda village in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, about 200 km from here.
“Sujni, who was playing near the well at the courtyard, climbed the low parapet of the well and fell into it. Hearing her cries, Hansa rushed to help but tripped on the scattered toys and fell into the well too,” a senior police official of Rajnagar police station said.
He said after Hansa’s husband died of a snake bite last year, she and her child used to live on the outskirts of the village.
“Hence, it was long after they fell into the well that a village friend, who visited her house in the afternoon, noticed the mishap and called other villagers. By the time they pulled out the bodies out of the well, both had died,” he added.
