New Delhi : Ten Indian states, most of them in the northeast, are yet to form human rights commissions to safeguard the rights of citizens, parliament was informed Tuesday.
Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Haryana, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and Uttarakhand are yet to set up their state human rights commissions, Minister of State of Home Affairs Shakeel Ahmad said during question hour in the Lok Sabha.
“The central government has issued advisories from time to time to all those states to set up their state human rights commissions at the earliest. The National Human Rights Commission has also pressed for the same,” he added.
“The reasons cited by those states for not setting up the state commissions are constraints of funds or less number of complaints of human rights violations which do not justify setting up of a full-fledged commission,” Ahmad said.
He said the central government is still pursuing the matter with the 10 states.
