Obama, who is spending Christmas vacation in Hawaii, received the briefing on the latest situation in South Asia on Saturday from White House officials.

A White House spokesman on Sunday said officials briefed Obama on the situation in the Middle East after Israel launched air strikes into the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip and killed more than 200 people.

Obama also has received security briefings on the buildup of troops between India and Pakistan, AP reported from Honolulu.

Obama, wife Michelle, and daughters Malia and Sasha are staying in a USD nine million, five-bedroom oceanfront house near downtown Honolulu, which was briefly darkened by a power outage that enveloped the island of Oahu this weekend.

Obama, who was born and raised in Hawaii, will be sworn-in as the 44th US President on January 20 in Washington.
