Claiming that the couple did enter into a ‘nikah’, M.A. Siddiqui said the family would approach the court to get a formal divorce.

Reacting 10 days after Malik’s claim that there had been no marriage, Siddiqui, a Dubai-based businessman, told newsmen that the Pakistani cricketer had cheated his daughter Ayesha.

“He is a cheat. He is a big liar. He has not only cheated my daughter but cheated this city and this country,” he said at his house in the posh Banjara Hills neighbourhood here. He demanded that Malik be banned from playing in India.

“My daughter was devastated and traumatised by his claim. She was hospitalised several times and is now undergoing treatment in Delhi,” he said.

Malik had stated in Karachi on Jan 21 that that no ‘nikah’ took place between him and Ayesha. He had claimed that his marriage plans with the Hyderabadi girl ended because the families could not reach an understanding on certain issues.

“The nikah of my daughter with Shoaib Malik took place on June 3, 2002,” Siddiqui said, claiming that he had proof of the marriage.

He said a formal divorce was required for her daughter to start a new life.

Earlier in the day, Siddiqui issued a statement alleging that Malik wanted to end the relationship “just to gain goodwill and build his image”. He claimed that his family had called Malik and his family many times, but they refused to talk.

In March 2005, Siddiqui had hosted a dinner for the Pakistani team at his house here when the team was in Hyderabad to play a warm-up match against India ‘A’.

Malik and Ayesha had met in Sharjah in 2000. It was love at first sight and they decided to marry.

Ayesha had told media here in 2005 that the marriage took place over phone on May 2, 2003, when she was in Hyderabad and Malik in Sialkot, his hometown in Pakistan.

However, the marriage was kept a secret for two years, as the families wanted Malik to settle down.

Malik had also paid two visits to Hyderabad in September 2002 and in November 2004 to meet her. She had claimed that they went to a cinema hall together but nobody recognised him.
