Muslim girls can nullify forced marriage

New Delhi: A Muslim girl has full right to nullify her marriage if she is forced to marry against her wish. She has every right to choose her husband, said Muslim bodies and Islamic scholars yesterday in a seminar under the banner of Islamic Fiqh Academy (IFA) in New Delhi.

The scholars said the Shariat granted freedom to both girls and boys to marry as per their choice and take any decision after they attained maturity. This is one of the important measures of Shariat with respect to individual freedoms and, therefore, it is utter injustice on part of parents or guardians to force a girl or boy for a marriage.

Raising strong objection to marriages solemnized against the consent of the girls, IFA said a Qazi or any other legal entity can cancel the Nikah, if he comes to know that the marriage was solemnized forcibly.

IFA general secretary, Ameen Usmani, said this unanimous decision was taken after deliberations on the issue that Islam grants women the right to marry a person of their choice and parents or guardians cannot impose their choice on them.

More than 300 hundred Muslim intellectuals belonging to more than a hundred important organizations including All India Muslim Personal Law Board and Darul Uloom Deoband nodded to this decision.
