Sher Zaman was arrested last month from the city of Dera Ismail Khan in North West Frontier Province after a 16-year suspect Aitzaz Shah told the investigators that he was also part of the planners.

Akbar Khan, father of Sher Zaman, told a news conference that the police have arrested his son under a conspiracy and that his son did not belong to any extremist group.

“My son is innocent and he has nothing to do with the murder of Benazir Bhutto, Khan said.

He said that Sher Zaman was earlier arrested by the police under the charges that he was involved in hijacking of containers but the court declared him innocent and was freed later.

He said that Police were upset over his release and considered it as their insult as the court could not find any evidence. He said his son was arrested from his home on January 18 and was handed over to Punjab police on 34 days physical remand.
