In a statement, posted on the internet, the command said more than 10,000 Turkish soldiers crossed into northern Iraq today, targeting PKK operatives.

This operation comes just hours after the Turkish National Security Council said its army would continue cross-border operations as long as this was deemed necessary.

In October 2007, the Turkish parliament approved executing military operations against PKK rebels in northern Iraq. Since 1984, Turkish Kurds have taken part in a number of violent episodes in their quest for autonomy and self-governance.
