Lucknow : Jailed underworld don turned independent legislator Mukhtar Ansari Thursday accused Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Vikram Singh of hatching a conspiracy to get him killed.
The allegation was levelled on the floor of the assembly through an adjournment motion sought to be moved by Ansari, who was on a parole from jail.
Attributing a close nexus between the state police chief and recently arrested mafia don Brijesh Singh, he said: “I have evidence to establish the connections between Vikram Singh and Brijesh Singh.”
Ansari and Brijesh Singh have been at loggerheads over the question of supremacy in the badlands of eastern Uttar Pradesh where both were running their respective gangs and were responsible for a number of murders in Varanasi, Ghazipur and some adjoining districts.
Earlier this month, Brijesh Singh was arrested by Delhi Police in Bhubaneswar, after eluding the Uttar Pradesh Police for more than a decade.
Flaunting a CD in his hand, Ansari told the house, “This CD contains a conversation that will confirm my charge against the DGP.
“The previous government of Mulayam Singh Yadav had ordered a probe into this CD, but a Thakur leader close to Mulayam got the inquiry withdrawn.”
Ansari said, “I have reasons to believe that I would get killed while I am being brought from Ghazipur jail to Lucknow to attend the assembly session.”
A highly placed police source dismissed Ansari’s allegations as “a well thought out melodrama in the aftermath of the arrest of his 21 henchmen last week.”
State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Laljee Verma, however, assured Ansari that the state government would beef up his security.
