Iraqi FM calls for influential Arab efforts for Iraqi reconciliation

Cairo : Visiting Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari on Tuesday called for influential Arab efforts to help realize national reconciliation in Iraq.

Zebari made the remarks at a joint press conference after his meeting with Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa.

He noted that “it is high time for the Arab League to make an influential Arab move to help realize national reconciliation in Iraq and support efforts in this sphere, especially after the security and economic situations in Iraq were improved.”

The Iraqi top diplomat noted that his talks with Moussa tackled the latest regional developments with an emphasis on the Iraqi issue.

Welcoming an Arab initiative calling for activating national reconciliation in Iraq, Zebari revealed that an Arab Leagued elegation will visit Baghdad soon to follow up the efforts to promote the Iraqi reconciliation.

Zabari also informed Moussa of the latest development of the security situation in Iraq and the necessity to achieve real reconciliation among Iraqi factions through political measures.

On U.S. President George W. Bush’ upcoming visit to the region, Zebari noted that the Mideast peace process and the Iraqi issue, among others, will be high on the agenda of Bush’s trip.

On Tuesday, Zebari also met with his Egyptian counterpart Ahme dAbu Gheit, who expressed his country’s readiness to fully cooperate with Iraq in all fields at a joint press conference after their talks.

Zebari, who attended the Arab foreign ministers extraordinary meeting on Sunday, also met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Sunday morning and tackled the developments in the Iraqi arena and efforts exerted to restore stability to Iraq and inter-Iraqi dialogue.
