Cairo : Arab League (AL) Secretary General Amr Moussa was scheduled to leave for Beirut on Wednesday to promote an overall Arab plan to solve Lebanon’s political crisis, Egypt’s official MENA news agency reported on Tuesday.
The AL chief, during the visit, will seek to convince pro-government majority and the opposition in Lebanon to approve the three-point plan adopted by the Arab foreign ministers during their consultative meeting held in Cairo on Saturday evening.
The Arab plan aims at immediately electing General Michel Suleiman as Lebanese president and proceeding to forming a national unity government and drafting a new electoral law.
Moussa was entrusted with holding contacts with all Lebanese, Arab, regional and international parties to implement the Arab League foreign ministers Council’s decision.
The council’s meeting at the foreign ministers’ level on Jan.27 will follow up the outcome of Moussa’s efforts in this respect, the report added.
Acting Lebanese Foreign Minister Tarek Metri on Monday expected that Moussa’s upcoming visit to Lebanon would help resolve the Lebanese crisis.
Lebanon’s presidential seat has been vacant since former President Emile Lahoud ended his term on Nov. 24, 2007 and the sharply divided Lebanese parliament has delayed the elections for11 times without a consensus.
