Lahorer : Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has demanded resignation of President Pervez Musharraf and establishment of a government of national unity to organize fair and transparent elections.
“Mr Musharraf has become highly controversial and under him the elections would not be fee and fair,” Sharif told a news conference.
Sharif earlier chaired a high level of his Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) to chalk out strategy for the February 18 parliamentary elections.
The party had cancelled election campaign after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto and has not yet resumed it.
“Pakistan is being described as a dangerous country in international media because of Mr Musharraf’s 8-year rule,” Sharif said.
He said Pakistan is at the brink of serious crisis.
And the assassination of Benazir Bhutto has proved to be a big blow to the forces of federation in Pakistan.
He said that Benazir’s killing has negative and serious consequences for Pakistan and that there is a need for general reconciliation.
“Controversial elections would be disastrous and will throw the country into anarchy and turmoil”.
He condemned President Musharraf’s economic policies and said the policies have led to unprecedented load shedding that has hit economy.
Nawaz Sharif said that the party opposed allowing any other country to conduct military operations in Pakistan.
He said Pakistan is a responsible state and there is no threat to its nuclear weapons.
“Pakistan nuclear program is of a peaceful nature. Pakistan will safe guarding its nuclear assets,” he said.
The meeting asked foreign leaders to desist from irresponsible statements about Pakistan nuclear program.
