Ex-Indonesian president Suharto slips into coma

JAKARTA, January 11 (RIA Novosti) – Indonesia’s former dictator Suharto is in coma, the detik.com news portal said on Friday citing doctors monitoring his condition over the past few days.

Doctors said Suharto’s condition is critical, and he has suffered multiple organ failure.

President Suharto was deposed in May 1998 following widespread protests and street demonstrations. He had risen to power in a 1965 coup. His regime was widely criticized for corruption and major human rights abuses.

Suharto, 86, has survived several strokes and stomach hemorrhages in recent few years.

Earlier on Friday his younger brother Probosutedjo was temporarily released from prison, where he is serving a four-year term for corruption, due to Suharto’s condition. “The release period is 24 hours,” the prison chief said.
